
Gerald Brettschuh
Gerald Brettschuh (born April 8, 1941, in Arnfels, Austria) is a distinguished Austrian painter, graphic designer, sculptor, and writer. He studied graphic design at the School of Applied Arts in Graz (Kunstgewerbeschule Graz) and graduated from the University of Applied Arts in Vienna in 1968. A scholarship led him to the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw from 1968 to 1969.
From 1970 to 1976, he worked as a graphic designer, illustrator, and assistant at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. In 1976, he returned to his hometown, Arnfels, where he has lived and worked as a freelance artist ever since.
His art includes oil painting, mixed media, watercolor, pastel, drawing, and woodcut. His works often focus on the human figure and the landscape of Southern Styria. He has also illustrated literary works, both his own and those of other authors.
Brettschuh was co-editor of the cultural magazine Sterz from 1977 to 1989 and has served as a visiting professor in Hamburg and Innsbruck. He is married to artist Christiane Muster-Brettschuh, and they have three children.
