Gerald Brettschuh (born April 8, 1941, in Arnfels, Austria) is a renowned Austrian painter, graphic artist, sculptor, and writer. He studied graphic design at the Kunstgewerbeschule Graz and later graduated from the University of Applied Arts in Vienna in 1968. A scholarship took him to the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw in 1968–69.
From 1970 to 1976, Brettschuh worked as a graphic designer, illustrator, and assistant at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. In 1976, he returned to his hometown Arnfels, where he has lived and worked as a freelance artist ever since.
His art spans oil painting, mixed media, watercolor, pastel, drawing, and woodcut. His themes often center on people and the South Styrian landscape. He also illustrated literary works, including his own publications and those of other authors.
Brettschuh was co-editor of the cultural magazine Sterz from 1977 to 1989 and has held guest professorships in Hamburg and Innsbruck. He is married to artist Christiane Muster-Brettschuh and has three children.
